Mr Murtaza Salem

Consultant Vascular and Endovascular Surgeon

Mr Murtaza Karimjee Salem is a Consultant Vascular and Endovascular Surgeon at Nottingham University Hospitals, where he has held his current post for over five years. With more than 15 years of experience in the field, he specialises in the full range of vascular conditions and treatments, including both open and minimally invasive (keyhole) surgical approaches. He completed a fellowship in minimally invasive surgery, equipping him to offer comprehensive assessment and expert advice across the spectrum of vascular interventions.

Mr Salem has a particular interest in the treatment of varicose veins and routinely performs a wide range of procedures under both local and general anaesthetic. He also has a dedicated focus on diabetic foot complications and non-healing leg wounds—an area he developed during his fellowship and subsequently enhanced through the creation of advanced care pathways for diabetic foot patients across Nottinghamshire.

He holds a PhD in Cardiovascular Sciences, with research focused on atherosclerotic plaques that lead to strokes. In this area, he provides expert clinical input on stroke prevention and management. He also runs regular aortic aneurysm clinics and advises on treatment options for a wide range of aneurysms.

In 2019, Mr Salem became the first person in the UK to complete a dedicated vascular surgery training programme. He went on to undertake a highly competitive fellowship in lower limb vascular surgery at St Thomas’ Hospital, London, and has received further training in Europe and the United States. He has presented academic research internationally and has a strong record of published work in the field.

Mr Salem has personally performed over 1,000 minimally invasive varicose vein procedures and regularly carries out open and endovascular arterial operations, including bypass surgery and endarterectomy. He also collaborates with cardiology teams on keyhole aortic valve replacement procedures and supports spinal surgeons during anterior spinal stabilisation surgeries.

Alongside his clinical duties, Mr Salem holds the position of Clinical Associate Professor and continues to contribute to vascular research through his role as Principal Investigator on multiple clinical trials. He is Chair of Vascular Governance at Nottingham University Hospitals, overseeing standards of care and safety within the department.
